Musical Director- Martin Quinn
Martin studied at the Royal Northern College of Music with Anthony Roden and combines a busy teaching, conducting and performing career. Martin taught singing at Sibford School, Banbury for ten years, but now concentrates on teaching privately from home.
Having previously conducted a larger choir Martin formed Akeman Voices in 1999 to fulfil his desire to present high quality, intimate, performances of renaissance and baroque music, of a mainly a capella style. The choir's reputation grew quickly seeing them perform across the south of England.
Martin also conducts a number of other local choirs. He has been Musical Director with the Warriner Choral Society, since 2004, conducting the choir through more than 30 concerts. Martin’s tenure with Warriner has seen it more than double in membership.
From November 2010 until July 2012 Martin was engaged as Joint Musical Director
with Banbury Choral Society.
He is Musical Director with Bicester Choral and Operatic Society (BCOS), having previously held the role of MD 1999 to 2002, conducting a wide range of genres from Purcell and Britten to G&S and Broadway musicals. He picked up the baton once again, in May 2012.
He acted as Chorus Master at Stowe Opera from 2002 until 2013: Rusalka, Don Carlos, Hansel & Gretel, and The Marriage of Figaro and Carmen at their new home of Winslow Hall.
Since 2010 Martin has been Musical Director for the Deddington Festival "Come and Sing" workshop and performance days. He has presented Carl Orff’s masterpiece Carmina Burana, Karl Jenkins’ The Armed Man, a concert performance of The Mikado and most recently Vivaldi’s Gloria.
As a singer Martin has worked with many of Britain’s leading opera companies. Roles include: Ruiz Il Trovatore and Morales Carmen (Stowe Opera), ErnestoDon Pasquale (Pavilion Opera, Manila, Philippines), Dr Blind Die Fledermaus and Goro Madam Butterfly (Opera Box). Concert engagements have included: Mozart Requiem (Christchurch Cathedral, Oxford) and Coronation Mass with Emma Kirkby, Messiah, West Side Story Suites "Action" (Oxford Philomusica), Bach B-minor Mass (Leicester Bach Choir), Britten’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings (Stamford Chamber Orchestra), and Rossini Petite Messe Solennelle / Bach St. John Passion / Handel Israel in Egypt (St. James Singers, Warwick). He has also recorded for Chandos, BBC Music Magazine, BBC Television, ITV Television and Britannia Music.
